(Austrian guys only) Do you usually say "Kindertagesheim" instead of "Kindergarten"?
Question 1) The same as the title question Question 2) Actually, I can speak Hochdeutsch although I am from Asia. Recently , I am getting more and more interested in "Österreichisches Deutsch" . Are the following words very commonly used in "Österreichisches Deutsch" ? Please correct me if my English explanation of the following words are INCORRECT Erdäpfel (potato) Faschiertes (minced meat) Paradeiser (tomato) Müch (milk) Haberer (friend) Question 3) With the aid of Collins German dictionary, I know how to say all the words above (e.g. Haberer, Faschiertes... ) in hochdeutsch. However, how can I pronounce the word "Haberer" in Österreichisches Deutsch? Does "Österreichisches Deutsch" and "Hochdeutsch" have the same pronunciation rules? If no, what are the difference? Can you give some examples? I will travel to Austria 1st time in my life soon. I am worried . I am afraid no Austrian will understand me if I read "Erdäpfel" in hochdeutsch? DANKE
every Austrian speaks both, the local dialect and the classic German (Hochdeutsch) - so I wouldn't worry. Unless it comes naturally, I'd stick to Hochdeutsch. Erdäpfel (potato) --- not quite: potatoes (pl), or "Erdapfel" (sg) = Kartoffel Faschiertes (minced meat) = "Hackfleisch" im Deutschen Wortraum. Paradeiser (tomato) Müch (milk) or "Mülch" or "Müli" or "Mülli" Haberer (friend) = well, I'd say more "Liebhaber". like so many Austrian words, it has it's roots in Hebrew and came through Jiddisch into "den Sprachschatz". Many words also have french roots - Trottoir, malträtieren, maltraitieren, etc. Others have Italian or Latin roots. have fun with the link below. There's a lot for you learn..... ps.: re. pronunciation - if it's spoken by a local who uses it day in and day out, you will have trouble "getting it all" in the following regions: Innviertel, Tirol and for a real "difference", travel to Vorarlberg - most Austrians have trouble with THAT dialect.
