what are some connections between the Roshimon effect and critical language awareness?

I think you mean the "Rashomon effect". I can see that there is a superficial connection, and a couple of deeper ones. Critical Language Awareness highlights the purposes behind speech acts, and Rashomon Effect shows how people's purposes affect how they see the same event. So one could, I suppose, use both as examples of how prejudices and desires impact on both speech and perception. But that's hardly earth-shattering. More interestingly, both ideas deal with the notion of objective truth; Rashomon suggests that it may not be there, Critical Language awareness suggests that language is not objective description but a purposeful act. They both challenge the notion that there is a single, non-relative answer. What I think is most interesting is when you apply the Rashomon effect to the project of Critical Language Awareness. CLA asks what the purpose behind speech is, but in asking that question one can fall into the trap of assuming that one can detect the purpose. In fact, what one is doing is detecting the purpose that you think is there. You bring your own purposes to the process of interpretation. In the language classroom then, what is important is not so much analysing the true purposes behind a speech act, but interacting with speech as a purposeful act. I mention the language classroom because CLA is about how one should approach the analysis of language. Being "correct" about purposes may not be possible, but at the least one must treat speech acts as things to react to, as they are uttered by people with purposes. In the real world, sentences never simply describe, but are made for reasons. As a result, the dry, universal nature of some grammar-based language curricula and textbooks is revealed as a weakness; their non-relativistic approach to language can undermine authentic language learning. I assume this is for an essay you have to write. I hope this helps.
