Cat’s Cradle is Kurt Vonnegut’s satirical commentary on modern man and his madness. An apocalyptic tale of this planet’s ultimate fate, it features a midget as the protagonist, a complete, original theology created by a calypso singer, and a vision of the future that is at once blackly fatalistic and hilariously funny. When the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, few could have anticipated its potential for devastation. Pulitzer prize-winning author John Hersey recorded the stories of Hiroshima residents shortly after the explosion and, in 1946, Hiroshima was published, giving the world first-hand accounts from people who had survived it. The words of Miss Sasaki, Dr. Fujii, Mrs. Nakamara, Father Kleinso…

Were the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki a war crime?

I came across an interesting point made by Leo Szilard (the physicist who developed the atomic bomb for the US): "Suppose Germany had developed two bombs before the US had any bombs. Suppose Germany had dropped 1 bomb, say, on Rochester and the other on Buffalo, but having run out of bombs, Germany lost the war. Can anyone doubt that the US would have defined the dropping of German atomic bombs on US cities as a war crime?" - Leo Szilard Any views on this? @ barco - I think you're a liar. If you were telling the truth you would've been what 5-6 years old at the time? How could you have had any idea what was going on. I never said this was my opinion, it was a quote by Szilard who would've known more about the situation than you did. "Amerikan" is spelt "American".

This is a highly debatable topic, you will most likely get varied opinions about it. Some say no, that it was necessary to bring an end to the war as quickly as possible, that if a land invasion of the island of Japan was necessary, tens of thousands Americans would have lost their lives, because the Japanese would have defended their homeland to their deaths. Other will say that yes it was a war crime, with good reason...the bombs caused thousands of horrible deaths to the civilian population, with crippling effects that lasted for generations and untold devastation. Because the bombs were a new technology, nobody really knew the degree of destruction they would bring, just that it was far superior to any other bomb yet developed. President Truman was interested in saving American lives, so he ordered their use, evidently without much deliberation or debate, it wasn't something that he agonized over for very long. Some say that what should have happened was for the US to inform the Japanese through diplomatic channels of the terrible new weapon in order to solicit a surrender, maybe even show them a display of the effects of the bomb. But given that there were still many Japanese military leaders who wanted to continue the fighting even after the bombs dropped doesn't lend credence to this suggestion. True, war is hell, war is madness, all is fair in love and war, insane acts of cruelty and inhumanity occur. My opinion is that there had to be alternatives, that the civilian population was not at war and didn't deserve to be annihilated. I am a peace advocate.
