Good German Films/Directors?

Hi- I study film and am also very interested in foreign languages and currently study German. I would like to combine the two and study German cinema but I don't know where to begin because I'm not very familiar with foreign films. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to where I could start in terms of films or even directors. I'd also be open to other kinds of foreign films beyond German ones. Thanks.

Tom Tykwer: "Run Lola Run" "The Princess and the Warrior" "Heaven" His latest film is "The International" Robert Weine: "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" - this is classic German expressionism Fritz Lang: "Metropolis" "M" Both classics. Werner Herzog (Disclaimer: his films are quite bizarre at times): "Aguirre:The Wrath of God" "Heart of Glass" "Stroszek" "Signs of Life" "Invincible" "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" His two "documentaries": "Grizzly Man" "The White Diamond" Some others: "Goodbye Lenin" "The Edukators" "In July" "Karakter" "Das Boot" I could list a lot of foreign films from other countries, but the ones above will keep you busy enough for now. Come back if you want French, Indian,Polish, Russian, Italian, etc. recommendations. Edit: Good catch Dog! How could I have missed "The Tin Drum"?! Murnau's "Nosefartu" is excellent too...I would watch that first then watch Herzog's version. Happy to see another person who knows quality cinema on here :)
