is it worth more to polish an old knife or leave the old stains on it?
I have an old German knife and the blade looks dirty and is scratched, should I clean it up or leave the natural wear for the value? my knife is a vintage 1937 German M7/2 and is a Hitler youth knife. It is engraved with the words "blut und ehre!" (blood and honor). It has a swastika on the obverse side of the handle. It has what looks like dirt, scratches, and some metallic looking stains on the blade. I cannot find anywhere if it is better to leave the old stains on it or to polish it and make it look new. Similar knives i have seen have gone for 4-600 dollars. I really don't want to decrease its value, but if polishing it increases the value, it would be nice to know.
If it has monetary value , it is better to be cleaned but only with the proper technique & cleaner, or it could ruin the finish. I am finding by looking for an answer , that German knives seem to be used as Meat slicers, from what I am finding Have you tried Google , I did , but I am not sure if that is the kind of knife you are referring to*
