What type of courses to take in High school to get into a seven year medical program?
My daughter is a freshman in high school who wants to do medicine for higher studies. She has Algebra 2, American Government, World History,Language Arts, Biology, Spanish and has Latin as an elective.
She has chosen Statistics and Environmental Science for sophomore AP classes. So far she has all A’s. Can someone enlighten us on what she could do for the next three years in high school to get into a seven year medical program. Deeply appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Look at the book, Medical School Admission Requirements. You may be able to get a copy at a library or purchase it via the link below. There is a section on combined bachelor’s/MD programs at several universities. Examples of requirements are:
four years of English
one year of chemistry or physics or one year each
one year of biology
math – eight semesters, some schools require a year of calculus
foreign language
social science
fine arts
GPA 3.5/4.0 – 4.0/4.0
ACT at least 25-34
SAT (math + reading) at least 1200-1320
SAT(math, reading, writing) at least 2100-2250
in top 5-10% of class
Check the web sites the medical schools for more information
Also, clinical experience is important. If she can volunteer to work in hospital or nursing home, that would help. Participation in a summer science program at a university might be good, too, particularly if she can get some exposure to research.
