A gaikokujin and a Japanese language textbook…?
Question for Japanese people:
I am aware that SOME foreigners may have a reputation of being rude and obnoxious, loud on the trains while people are trying to sleep, and being disrespectful by speaking to an elderly person in slang that they learned watching anime.
However, what’s the overall impression of the opposite side of the spectrum. In other words, do Japanese people consider it to be frustrating to deal with or speak to the foreigner who uses humble language (keigo) to purchase sushi at the local konbini, or call the neighbor’s dog? Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme, but I hope it gets my point across. When foreigners are always in polite mode (as is taught in many Japanese language textbooks), and Japanese people have to interact with them, what is the overall impression? Is it expected behavior or frustrating behavior or surprising behavior or desirable behavior or… etc?
I think they like the fact that we try to speak Japanese. When I made a mistake, my friends would correct me and help me learn how to speak better. They are very helpful to us when we are trying to learn.
